After roughly two years of silence, the Voidspace servers are back up and running — and they have been for over two months now. If you're reading this, the site is live, the game is live, and we're not going anywhere this time.
Voidspace was originally built to run on Google Cloud Platform, and while it worked well, the hosting costs were significant. I kept the servers running as long as I could while working full time elsewhere, but eventually the costs became unsustainable and the servers went offline in 2024.
It was never a question of giving up on the project — just a matter of finding a better way to run it. I always planned to bring it back once the right opportunity presented itself.
The codebase was tightly coupled to Google Cloud, and rewriting it by hand as a solo developer would have taken years. Instead, I used AI-assisted development to migrate the entire stack to run on local infrastructure. The result: Voidspace now runs on a single server with no cloud dependency and no recurring cloud bills.
I've been using AI professionally since 2022, and it's a natural fit for a game like this. AI can help with virtually every aspect of development and content creation — writing and editing code, building new features, generating sound effects, creating equipment icons, designing new ships, producing 3D models, composing music, writing lore and dialogue, and more. For a solo-developed sandbox MMO, that's a game changer.
The game is up and playable. If you've paid for access in the past — whether through donations, pledges, or purchases — your account still works. You can log in and play right now.
However, there are a couple of temporary limitations:
Both of these will be re-enabled in the near future. If you're a new player eager to try Voidspace, hang tight — we'll announce when registration opens back up.
Voidspace is now a side project, but it's one I intend to keep running for as long as possible. Some players have already found their way back — if you're one of them, come say hi in the Discord.
Going forward, I'd like to experiment with AI being involved in every aspect of the game — not just development, but content generation, game administration, and anything else that keeps the world running and growing. It's a perfect testbed for seeing just how far AI-assisted game development can go.
Thank you to everyone who's stuck around or wondered what happened to us. We're back.
See you in the void.
